Top Tips for a Twill Suit

Our twill suit is an enduring style icon, adding casual charm to the everyday. Styled here by our good friend and colleague Robin, it pairs perfectly with our new Oxford shirts and lambswool crewnecks, with the perfect accessories for every occasion in store now. From knitted ties to vibrant pocket squares, read on for expert advice on how to make the every day that little bit special.

Top Tip Number 1: Don't Roll the Dice on Looking Polished

Alright gents, settle down and listen up. When it comes to looking a little effortless, accessories can make or break your look. Whilst you don't want to look like you've tried too hard, a shabby tie can take the shine away from any well-thought-out fit.

When you're not wearing your ties (we recommend a four-in-hand knot, which sounds more of a handful than it really is), roll them to keep them looking sharp and wrinkle-free.

A classic roll is achieved by laying the tie flat and rolling it from skinny end to wide. Imagine you're rolling up a copy of the FT, safe for your long commute home. For a more relaxed look, roll your tie more loosely, as you would a beach towel at the end of a long hot day on the sands. Perfect for those weekends where you don't want to look like you've just rolled out of bed, nor into the set of Industry.

Top Tip Number 2: Complement for Guaranteed Compliments

There's a veritable treasure trove of accessories ready to upgrade your autumnal suiting. Pocket squares should be thought of as the groomsmen to the tie: always supporting, never competing and ready to impress the bridesmaids. If your tie takes on a bold pattern, opt for a monochromatic pocket square in a vibrant hue.

Knitted ties are the laid-back cousins of the classic silk tie: understated and relaxed, offering a subtle charm. Add a more playful pocket square to bring this sleepy yet stylish accessory to life - add texture, prints and contrasting colours, the world is your sartorial oyster.

If colour theory leaves you scratching your head like your girlfriend has run out of Aesop for you to steal, then use the colour wheel as your guide. Congruent pairings come from colours right by each other on the colour wheel (think port and blue cheese - it makes sense that they taste delicious together and colours work in the same way.) Complementary pairings come from opposite sides of the wheel: red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange (like a dry rosé and charcuterie - we can't explain why it works, but trust us that it does).

Top Tip Number Three: Crew it Your Way

Knowledge is knowing that not every day demands a shirt and tie and wisdom is knowing what to wear on those days instead. May we suggest a crewneck jumper?

The crewneck offers an array of styling options, with your style kept quiet in a neutral navy or oatmeal. Alternatively, follow our colour advice and bring in a contrasting tone to lift the outfit.

Deep blues and reds can look regal, whilst pastels lift any look from the deepest winter slumber. Soft hues melt into buttery lambswool textures, whilst more vibrant dyes can ensure your style is standout from a mile away.

You can shop any of these looks online now, or step into one of our London stores for expert style advice from Robin or any of our staff.
