Five things we’re excited for in 2018
2017: the year of Article 50, Prince Harry’s engagement and Sir Plus’s first-ever store! All things that will be remembered in years to come, and that will continue to shape the agenda in 2018, we’re sure. For now, we’ll leave the politics and wedding gossip to those more qualified than us, and instead focus on a few of the things we’re looking forward to in the new year.
The Spring Summer Collection
Call us narcissistic, but the first thing on our new year’s radar has to be our upcoming spring and summer collection. Like all proud parents, we’re eager to show off our new bundle of joy to the world, and secretly, it’s our favourite so far. We’re adding the finishing touches to the new range as we speak and will be sharing a few sneak peeks on Instagram in the coming weeks. Expect old favourites such as the Nehru Jacket and the Grandad Shirt updated in fresh fabrics, as well some all-new additions to the Sir Plus family including Cuban Shirts, Mandarin Jackets, and a very exciting print collaboration.
Yes, we know that festival season is still a few months away. But with temperatures plummeting and dry January looming, you’ll forgive us for looking ahead to the summer. This year, we’ve got our eyes on probably the best located festival in the world (in our opinion, anyway), Portobello Live. Organised with Wall of Sound and Rough Trade, there’ll be an eclectic mix of music, spoken word and cabaret, from 30th April - 1st May. A few weeks later (25th-27th May) and over in the east end, close to our Bethnal Green studio, we’ll be visiting Victoria Park for All Points East, headlined by Bjork, LCD Soundsystem and The xx.
Brooklyn Flea Market
Here at Sir Plus, we love nothing better than a good market. So for our first big trip of 2018, we’re headed to the Brooklyn Flea, which we’re reliably told is one of the best markets in the entire USA. We’ll be setting up stall on 24th and 25th February, armed with our latest arrivals and flying the flag for British manufacturing. Hopefully we’ll be more West Side (Success) Story than Muppets Take Manhattan. Stay tuned to the Journal for more.
In between everything else we have planned for 2018, we’re hoping to find a little time to soak up some culture. The Hayward Gallery reopens in January after a two-year refurbishment, with a major retrospective of German photographer Andreas Gursky (above). Closer to our Portobello home, the Design Museum looks back at 70 years of supercar genius in Ferrari: Under My Skin. While you’re there, pop into Jon Snow: Colour is My Brand, an unlikely collaboration with the Channel 4 newsreader which delves into his extensive tie collection – the most impressive you’ll find until the launch of our own tie range later this year.
We’ve been dropping hints throughout this article, but we’re just going to say it: we’re pretty excited about our new store at 306 Portobello Road. If you haven’t been to visit us yet, make it your new year’s resolution to do so. We’re thrilled to have found permanent lodgings after six years on Portobello Market, home to our full collection including coats, knitwear and jackets. In the coming months we’ll be throwing some exclusive customer events – sign up to the newsletter and you'll be the first to know.
